This mini unit was created as a flexible, low-preparation Visual Arts resource for students exploring Pop Art, Australian identity, symbolism and visual communication. The activities are designed to be completed as three connected tasks, allowing students to move from skill-building and experimentation through to a resolved poster outcome.
Students begin by creating Pop Art animals, using provided templates or developing their own animal designs. This task introduces students to bold colour, pattern, outlines, repetition and simplified imagery, connecting to key Pop Art conventions. In the second task, students watch Red Dog and complete a worksheet response, drawing and recording visual ideas, symbols, themes and moments from the film. The final task asks students to consolidate their learning from Task 1 and Task 2 by creating a Pop Art poster inspired by a theme from Red Dog, such as loyalty, friendship, belonging, Australian landscape, travel, community or identity.
This resource supports students to combine popular culture, Australian imagery and personal interpretation in a clear and engaging way. It can be used as a short mini unit, end-of-term activity, relief lesson sequence, or scaffolded introduction to Pop Art and Australian identity.
